Kids are always great, Yola used to be great.
|
|
Kids are really great. In three years I don't think I ever had one impossible student. Bad, yes, impossible? No.
The textbooks for juniors have some interesting material
Vietnamese teachers. Western teachers are hit or miss, some really great, some dreadful. But that's everywhere in Vietnam.
|
Yola was terrific when I started in 2017. They cared a lot about the kids, about the facilities. But it feels like it is just becoming another money trap.
Online homework system was implemented 'because parents requested' but never once did I see a parent sign off on the homework. Most of the kids don't do it, it would literally take hours sometimes for them to do it if they did it all. Plus, a lot of the activities will mark kids wrong if they have a small little error. Kids get discouraged and give up.
Western teacher quality has really gone down. When I began there was a fair share of those off-putting people but it became endemic by the end. They don't care about what they're doing, they dress terribly, they have no business teaching.
But, Yola pays their Viet teachers, who really do care a lot and put a lot of work into their lessons -- half of what western folks make. Get real. Reward hard work, regardless of the color of the skin of the teacher.
The facilities are really in need of repair. When I began, the centers were new and clean. Three years though of scuffs and kids bumping up against walls really has taken its toll.
Glass doors leading into classrooms!! Who thought that was a good idea? Twice they came crashing down, at least that I know of. Crazy!

Invest in your company. There are so many awful language centers in HCMC, you can really set yourselves apart. Parents are not dumb, they know when their kid is learning and when he/she is not.
Pay your Viet teachers more. They do an incredible job and it is so frustrating to see them put their heart and soul into the job for a fraction of these white folks' salaries.
Invest in upkeep. Stop opening new centers! The ones you have now are falling apart!!
Really do your best to serve those kids well. They deserve the best.
