Can’t Get Out of Their Own Way
|
|
The people are some of the best I’ve met. Friendly, dedicated people who love an industry and a company that doesn’t always love them back.
There’s flexibility in remote work, depending on the department and manager.
Perks (few and far between compared to even recently) can be fun/cool/interesting.
Great benefits, and access to discounts countrywide.
|
You will always be expected to do more; anything less than the work of two or more people is seen as not being productive.
If you’re doing good work, you’ll almost never hear about it. If you’re doing work that’s below where they feel you should be (which in reality is a normal amount of work for a single person to be doing) then you can bet they’ll make sure to tell you, but not offer to help or listen to suggestions. If they do remember and acknowledge the work you’ve done, be ready for them to forget it when performance reviews come along. You’ll be told you’re a “rockstar” one day, and told you need to “step up” the next.
“It’s a lifestyle”, they’ll say, as way to cover up the fact that there’s an unwritten expectation that you’re always on call, and ready to stop whatever you’re doing to help. This was to the point where taking approved vacation time was met with disapproving comments.
Unwillingness to even think about adapting to the changing broadcast landscape. Revolving door of upper management who had success in the past, but insist on doing the same things that worked then, without changing them to work now, and then being surprised when the results aren’t the same. Numbers drop, people get let go, management doesn’t change their approach, and the cycle repeats.
If a contest getting to air, or a style of show means that announcers, producers, or anyone else involved gets left feeling unsupported and as if they are replaceable (despite being told time and time again they were brought in for unique talents that only they have), well then too bad. You don’t matter, just what you do, and they’re quick to remind you of that.
Recycling of talent, and hesitant to grow from within. Growth will be dangled in front of you for years, with continued promises of “do this extra work and it’ll put you in line to move up”, only to have that extra work just become an expected part of your normal work, and leave you no closer to the growth they’d mentioned. When people grow tired of this and leave, management wonders why and goes back to the industry revolving door of older (but still talented) talent to replace them. After which, the company will wonder why fewer and fewer people want to work in the industry, and why they’re having such a hard time finding young people to replace the talent they have that is aging out, without realizing that they’re encouraging their own problems.
For on air staff, job security is laughable. It’s radio, and the adage “you’re only as good as your last break” rings true. Any break, any show could be your last, and you could have no idea. I’ve personally seen shows with high ratings (which aren’t everything and doesn’t mean there aren’t issues behind the scenes) be dropped at moments notice, and shows with bottom of the barrel numbers hang on for years. You spend every second of every day wondering if it’s your last, and it’s exhausting.

In a word? Care.
The industry is full of talented, dedicated people, who are in it because they love it. There’s nothing like radio, and I will always love what it once was. But the heart, and love that made it so special is gone, because the people in charge stopped caring. Caring about the people who make each station special. Caring about the connections and relationships that made the industry survive beyond any and all expectations.
Caring about anything other than the bottom line, because that’s just making it worse.
It’s been a series of decisions that stop the bleeding in the meantime, while hurting things in the long run. Death by a thousand self inflicted cuts, while constantly asking why it’s happening.
Until they figure out the problem is them, things aren’t going to get better.

Comfortable Place to Work but No Room for Advancement
|
|
Really friendly team and leadership. Feels like you're working at a small company within a big one. Good work-life balance.
|
No room for growth. Can work there for years without any opportunity to be promoted, get a raise, etc.
Raises each year are framed as a raise based off performance but really it's just a basic cost of living 1-2% raise everyone gets.

Not enough pay
|
|
You get to work remotely, and sometimes will receive a small Commission a few times a year.
|
You will work hours of unpaid overtime, the wages are notoriously low in the industry, constant layoffs so you will never know how secure your role is

Great company, great people and work life balance

Nice building with lots of great people. They really do believe in work life balance. Summer hours is a bonus.
|
Not any fault to Corus but layoffs are inevitable, but that’s industry wide.
