Beat you down mentality
|
No matter how much this company makes. They will always play poor. And constantly complain. The management is terribly inexperienced. And they seem to steal money thru their contractor friends.

Downhill fast since West Fraser took over
|
The pay is about average for the industry, however they only pay time and a half for OT, most mills pay double time. WF just announced they are canceling hourly employees profit sharing bonus, which has severely depleted our hourly employees motivation to continue working in the north as there is no longer a financial incentive compared to southern locations which have a much lower cost of living and offer a higher quality of life, (management's bonuses remain unchanged). Any other mill I have worked for offers profit sharing to hourly workers. WF requires shift workers to work under averaging agreements, which saves the company money as staff receive less OT pay. Benefits are not good. It is a regular occurrence to be spoken down to, yelled at and blamed for equipment failures. WF chooses to run "lean" as they call it, translation - short staffed, therefore it can be borderline impossible for many staff to take a vacation as WF requires staff to find their own vacation coverage and if they can't convince another employee to work excessive and underpaid OT to cover, then they don't get vacation as WF does not train back up's for key positions. You will get a pay out for unused vacation time which is paid out at regular time rate. The schedule is decent but you will rarely get your days off as you will be required to cover staff shortages, vacation and sick days, therefore I can not recommend this mill to anyone who has a family or a personal life outside of work. All of management is made up of two families, the hourly staff are looked at as disposable numbers. If there was ever a mill who's employees could benefit from a union, it's West Fraser High Level.

Productive and focused workplace

I completed a co-op in IT as a Student Systems Analyst and I learned several skills that I can now apply to my current work. The hardest part about my job was that occasionally work would pick up and I would have to take some extra time to ensure my work was clean and my deadlines were being met. I enjoyed travelling to parts of B.C. and the U.S., learning about different business systems and mills! Overall a great job experience.

Fast paced workplace with focus on production and profits

West Fraser in Alberta has gained a reputation for treating employees as just a number. They run bare minimum at the Edson site; and they do not hire enough employees for the work they expect and the poor morale amongst West Fraser employees is a well known fact.

Worked for this company for 18 years. And no member of management. Came over to say a word to me no thanks for your hard work nuttenâ¦. West Fraser treats there employees like they are nutten more then a number no respect

They care more about production than they do employees
|
I gave 8 months to West Fraser until I had a heat stroke and they didnât care whether I got to the hospital or not they told me to clock out and go home, when I got back I was written up .Instead of calling an ambulance for me or asking if I needed help there main concern was production. Management is by far the worst Iâve ever seen. Not recommending anyone to work there unless u have no family and only wanna be treated like a number.

Great place to work.

I worked as an electrician at the Mansfield mill for about two years. Overall, it was an excellent job with excellent pay and benefits. Great work environment. Mill management knew how to run a sawmill and cared about the employees. The electrical department was great and the guys I worked with were all excellent electricians. The only reason I left was to get closer to home. When I was there, they only ran one shift. So work/life balance was extremely predictable and it also meant that call-outs we're extremely rare.

Good place too work at with decent pay, for the most part management is pretty easy too get along with, the worst part about my job is having too work out in the elements at times
