tyo:8309 https://www.glassdoor.com?employer_id=708198 Apr 3rd, 2024 12:00AM Open Open SuMi Trust Senior Fund Administrator No career progression Location, good office, good people in general. Shift pattern is nice. Hard working staff, act as a team to meet deadlines. Basic salary could be a lot more in line with market rates. The basic salary remained at a low level even with years of experience, they tie the basic salary to your grade and then have three levels to each grade whereby one can only move up one level within a grade each year, if your very lucky that is. I remember that my basic salary remained the same for three years on the trot at the bottom of the salary scale for my grade, didn't bode well for my self esteem or appreciation. Even if your lucky enough to progress each year up a level and reach level 3 within your grade, you only then become eligible for an internal promotion but then it all depends on business needs. Essentially you could be stuck at level 3 within your grade for many more years. I remember a time when 10 minutes of a lunch break was all I got for months on end, the issue was raised but seemed to fall on deaf ears. Months later I noticed an improvement, I was happy to get my entitled one hour lunch break back. They may offer a tiny bonus in lieu of a pay rise after the performance appraisals are completed. You would be extremely lucky to get both a tiny pay rise plus a tiny bonus. Financial security is a peace of mind and one can set up one's life around a particular job. Some overtime but usually not more than one hour, no pay within the first hour is a downside. Although there were Pros as outlined above, unfortunately there are numerous downsides to working here also, career progression is the number one issue and it is company-wide, people basically spend years in the same level position which does nothing for self-esteem, people get complacent and lose any ambitions they had upon entering the company. Simply put there is none to minimum organic growth. Management there have no interest in lower down employees training and promotional prospects. You just become operational in your role with the least amount of training possible and will remain at that level for years. Promotions are extremely limited. They make you do a performance appraisal at end of each year and your like sure I got zero training in anything throughout the year. They then tell you that you have to manage your own career and training. It's very counter productive because you know that the main goal is to meet deadlines and the workload is heavy at the best of times meaning no proper training can ever be scheduled even if you ask times over for additional training. On the very rare occasion is any cross training scheduled. There is no career pathway set out for anybody, your just doing a job. It's like a very counter productive maze where somehow the team works well enough to get the daily tasks completed, your career goals and objectives as set out on your appraisal will never be entertained. Appraisals are always downgraded and never reach your own expectations even if you have mastered any skills from one year to the next without any addition training. No advise was ever given on how to attain a better performance appraisal or how to achieve a higher level within ones job title grade. I think HR have over complicated their whole remuneration and appraisal process. I got discriminated against for a promotion based on an internal interview process only. I'm single but the job went to a temporary member who was barely in the company but had family commitments. I was told by the interviewers that I should have got the job hands down but the VP overrided the decision even though he wasn't even at the interviews. He actually stormed out of his makeshift office about a half an hour before the end of the shift to leave for home, leaving the door bang shut behind him, showing his dissatisfaction in front of the glaring eyes of all other team members. There was no need for it at all. He was being self important and making a statement that his decision is final here in all respects knowing himself that the outcome had been preplanned in any case. I actually felt so bad, totally belittled and felt like a right fool for even putting myself forward for this so called wonderful career advancement opportunity that was such a rare occurrence in any event. The job was basically created in advance for the temp to make him permanent. Sad but true and everybody knew this but nobody speaks up including myself, however I think one of the AVP's may have spoken up fair play to him. The temp was meant to start a new temp contract in a different department but a permanent staff member resigned leaving an opening at an even higher level to the person that resigned, which was then in line with the temp contractors level contrary to lower level work responsibilities and still learning. Meetings were held in advance by the various VP's and SVP from both departments, the interviews were only set up by HR as a matter of process. It was just so obvious. I'm just referring to obstacles in terms of career progression. I had to wait an extra two years for another promotional opportunity to come up internally. Thrust me I wasn't the only person on the team who fell fool to manipulation of job opportunities which rarely became available. I remember one occasion where an exceptional senior who was the go to man for anybody with any issues on their funds, was overlooked for a promotional opportunity in favour of an external candidate. Soon afterwards that permanent employee did leave. Some people have a habit of taking up roles in this company going in on the blind, realising that career advancement is at best minimum and then returning to their previous employer. Encountering mental health issues poses a potential cost to the company, more awareness is necessary as its not all doom and gloom, people can recover fast. Its all great promoting positive mental health to employees who have never had an issue in this field. I lost my job due to mental health issues and unusual circumstances, I handed in my notice as was too embarrassed to say that i was having issues. The VP actually accused me of something when I went to speak to him in the office the week prior, rather than being more sympathetic and showing empathy on a human level. I honestly dont think he meant bad, he just lacked listening skills. I asked for re-instatement but they refused as a business decision was made to backfill the job. I was able to prove everything that I was completely out of action for a lengthy period and couldn't communicate, but still no proper resolution on a human level. Very poor management I must say. The VP knew I was unwell the week before I gave notice, he just didn't recognise early signs which can easily manifest and anybody would have known that there was something up from the notice, that I actually gave. It was actually more of a notice that I was not well enough to continue in employment, it was accepted as a resignation notice when in reality I didnt intend to resign. The mental health first aid course should be taken by all those in management positions. Also HR would have had information on a next of kin if they really were concerned about protecting my job and interested in my wellbeing. My next of kin didn't even know where I was for a long time but he could have informed HR of this. Seriously like I had set up my whole life around this job and all of a sudden the financial security was gone and just taken away in a heartbeat. Management there can be rude at times, salary can be a main focus for many. Some fall into management lacking any leadership qualities. -1.0 NEGATIVE 0.0 NEUTRAL 0.0 NO_OPINION 0.0 2.0 4.0 2.0 1.0 3.0 2.0 2.0 708198 Open Implement proper training plans for junior staff and maybe introduce some kind of graduate training programme for new entries regardless of age so that there is guaranteed structure to the training. They shouldn't be waiting 10 - 15 years to become supervisors which is actually a very low level in itself. Some may never even reach the level of supervisor. Supervisors need to be more aware of the whole performance appraisal process, its importance and carry it with equal measure as other work tasks. Supervisors are responsible for monitoring the performance of junior staff and assisting in helping them achieve their goals and objectives. Complacent supervisors who just like to delegate the same tasks to the same people each day because its easier for them, ultimately result in poor performance appraisals for junior members because goals and objectives have to be rolled forward to the next year. Management need to supervise the supervisors. Please include a member of HR in any career opportunity interviews as a third eye simply to make sure that any decision made is made fairly and based on merit in a competitive process. Be more conscious that anybody can encounter mental health disorders at any point in their lives and this is not a sign of weakness. It usually isn't work related either and can happen a person for a variety of reasons, usually there is a trigger involved in certain situations. Whats important is more awareness. Please make it mandatory for everyone assuming a management position to take the Mental Health first aid course and learn how to identify early signals. There is a remuneration and appraisal process in place introduced some years ago by HR. They introduced it to try to be fair to employees because they tend to stay long term and can end up in a rut due to a lack of promotions and career progression opportunities. I personally feel that this process is also micro management and totally overcomplicated. Appraisals are done once a year only and can be an important crunch time for many employees. Management need to reinforce this down through the team structure to create an environment of continuous learning and training so that career objectives and goals can actually be achieved. Informal appraisals with team members should be carried out throughout the year so that team members know that their best interests are being considered. Alot more time needs to be set aside to allow employees actually achieve their goals and objectives as set out and not to be left short stringed when it comes to the next formal appraisal period. More clarity needs to be given to employees about what exactly is required of them to move from one level to the next within their job title grade, so that they can set goals and objectives in their appraisal which will almost guarantee them a move up in level if and only if they achieve all goals and objectives during the year. Sometimes management do not provide a listening ear to lower down team members views and team members can become reluctant to raise genuine concerns even if just a once off. Maybe introduce a suggestion box whereby team members can air there concerns if any, anonymously. They won't need to fear being problematic or looked less favourable during crunch times. This may give a voice to team members who feel that they have no voice because of strict hierarchy structures within teams. 0.0 [] REGULAR No No 9.0 Open Apr 11th, 2024 04:40AM Apr 11th, 2024 04:40AM Sumitomo Mitsui Trust

I lost my job due to mental health issues and unusual circumstances, i handed in my notice as was too embarrassed to say that i was struggling with the workload. I asked for re-instatement but they refused as a business decision was made to backfill the job. Very poor management bordering on discrimination again. The VP knew I was unwell even before I gave notice. Whatever happened to the so called mental health first aid course that he must have taken. Management their can be rude and only interested in filling their own pockets and drawing from the company. If your genuinely looking for a proper career in this area then don't be foolish stunting your progress by working here.
