Bayer: The Unicorn of Ankeny
Rare.
That is the 1st word that comes to mind when I think of Bayer. You'll have to go work there yourself to truly understand what I'm typing here.
*co-workers are incredibly patient, helpful, and fun to be around; so many fun and interesting characters that work there
*great leadership: This is just one example, but, my supervisor would send texts on their days off to warn us about inclement weather. I've had great bosses before, but this person is peerless, on their own level. Supremely classy and considerate.
*state-of-the-art machinery named after Pokemon and Pacman ghosts
*clean, modern workplace, breakroom stocked with many kosher beverages and coffee
My contract ended early, due to external factors outside of anyone's control, that would be the only con I can think of.
Whenever there was issues of any type though, they were responsive, tried to solve them quickly.
Example: I kept hitting my head on Biocell doors b/c I'm tall.
Once leadership knew about this, shocks were ordered and installed to make working there safer. Even though most of the employees were shorter than I, and doing this probably made it harder for them to close the doors.

Good, not great
Nice people. Flexible time off.
Not very tech-focused. They are physical products company, not a tech company, so depending on which branch of the company it was, the codebases were not well managed.
This lead to some frustration. It was demotivating to work on something that has major architectural flaws and is hard to work on.
For context, this was not everywhere, just where I was.

Lower pay/poor bonus
work life balance is good, most all employees are great to work with some bad apples/slackers
I dont see a full bonus for the foreseeable future. Bonus is based on how well the company does, not the product you support. Not very competitive with pay/bonuses compared to other companies

Bayer is a different beast
Longevity of employment
Compensation is good
Holidays observed is more than most companies
Bayer has standards that can be changed or ignored depending on which part of the plant the work is being done in.
Things are done at either lightning speed or molasses.

Stop allowing plants to change specifications on a whim. Either force the plants to write exceptions for each and every item or change the specifications to be universal between all plants sections.

Stressful and Toxic
Diversity and Inclusion isn’t an issue at Berkeley. Most individuals are good people. It’s interesting talking to the Europeans and learning about their experiences.
Bayer Berkeley is understaffed. If the building was built more than 5 years ago, it’s probably falling apart.
Most buildings are run with a skeleton crew. One, because of constant layoffs and workforce reductions over the years. Two, because the only operators who can afford to live here bought houses 20 years ago.
Things aren’t much better on the white-collar side. The bulk of the people who aren’t on the research side are also overworked. People have sent me emails at 9 pm and 5 am, often on the same night by the same person. There are frequent blame games, and the place is fairly cutthroat. Even hourly contractors like myself work tons of OT, and then the Bayer people turn around and complain about the bills. Lots of staff augmentation because there aren’t enough FTEs, but because they’re staff aug, there’s constant turnover which introduces tons of inefficiency. Also, the Quality Unit is surprisingly incompetent.
Bayer loves flying in Europeans for short-term assignments. This burns tons of cash. Also, these Europeans seem to have a colonial mindset, and often act superior to the locals. Just as importantly, they seem to go to quite a few meetings, in-person, to Germany for…reasons.
Also pay isn’t the best, but it’s just not feasible for them to match the pay in tech.

Spend more money to staff the place properly. Maybe you could save some money by investing more in local staff, instead of flying people in for short term assignments.
